The Cool Murphy, New Orleans Best of Brunch List

Updated: Jun 19

To quote Ron Swanson, "There has never been a sadness that can't be cured by breakfast food." We at Team Cool Murphy believe there's very little that can't be remedied over a good brunch.

Given that our city is also best in class when it comes to having a bevy of breakfast options to stuff your face with, we've narrowed down our own 'Best of Brunch' list to wake up your salivary glands. And bonus, it includes one family-friendly French Quarter Secret most New Orleanians don't know about!

Here are some of our favorite places to check out:

Elisa Cool Murphy's Best in Brunch

  1. Who Dat Cafe - Located in the Marigny neighborhood, this cafe is a favorite among locals for its delicious breakfast dishes and coffee. The funky decor and friendly staff add to the laid-back atmosphere. The food is comfort-food plus, but there are also lighter options and amazing beverages. Try the corn cakes or chicken fried steak sandwich. You'll catch Elisa here with Matt and the dogs on the occasional Sunday after church and early with clients on weekdays too!

  2. Commander's Palace - This iconic New Orleans restaurant has been serving up classic Creole cuisine since 1893. The bright turquoise building is hard to miss, and the elegant ambiance and attentive service make for a special dining experience. Elisa was introduced to the place by her grandmother, Grammy Cool. Or rather would have been if she'd ever allowed the children to come to brunch with her. Elisa made it a point to go as soon as she could as an adult!

  3. Atchafalaya - This Uptown spot is known for its creative twists on classic Southern dishes. It's so good the whole team wanted to claim it! The Bloody Marys are a must-try, and the cozy atmosphere and attentive service make for a great meal. Elisa discovered this spot while shopping for property with her Mother. Another reservation they had got canceled, and they wound up glad it was!!! Try the shrimp and grits!

Sara Skjerli's Best in Brunch

  1. Carmo - Carmo in New Orleans is a great brunch spot due to its combination of fresh and flavorful dishes, clean and bright decor, and specialty cocktails. Sara likes it because it's casual and unique. Located in the Warehouse District, Carmo offers a creative menu with dishes inspired by cuisines from around the world, such as their tropical acai bowls and seafood gumbo. The vibrant decor with colorful murals and natural light creates a welcoming and relaxing atmosphere for diners. And to top it off, their specialty cocktails are a hit among brunch-goers.

  2. Holy Crepes - Holy Crepes is a popular spot in New Orleans thanks to its delicious gluten-free crepes served in a cozy atmosphere. The crepes are made with high-quality ingredients and are customizable to fit various dietary restrictions. The menu also includes sweet and savory options, such as the "Funky Monkey" with Nutella and bananas, and the "Cuban" with ham, cheese, and pickles.

  3. Holy Mimosas - Not a brunch spot, but to Sara it's not brunch when there's not a mimosa inside. If mimosas are your thing too, then there are plenty of options in New Orleans Sara's two go-to's include Barcadia and Trenasse, which offer fun atmospheres and endless mimosas,

Jess Rocco's Best in Brunch

  1. Paladar 511 - You can't keep Italian gal Jess out of Paladar. Heck, you can't keep anyone out of this delicious restaurant in the Marigny. Paladar offers attentive service in a beautifully designed warehouse space. The intimate atmosphere and creative dishes make for a memorable dining experience. The food is one you'll write home about no matter where you're from. Elisa and Jess fought over who got to share Paladar! Both agree you must try the home fries and the arincini. lol

  2. Mr. Mao's - This funky spot in the Garden District serves up unique Asian-inspired dishes amongst eclectic decor. The friendly staff and creative menu make for a fun and flavorful meal. A world traveler born in the New York City area, Jess knows a thing or two about authentic flavors, and Mr. Mao's hits the spot.

  3. Palm and Pine - This trendy restaurant in the the Quarter offers unique dishes with global flavors in a cool and fun space. The attentive service and funky decor make for a memorable meal. The crudo and the duck is a must try and you can't go wrong with the apps.

Brittany Jasper's Best in Brunch

  1. Willa Jean - This is one of Brit's favs because you can always bet the food will be delicious and more than filling. This contemporary hot spot has a lofty feel which is the perfect vibe as it's snuggled away in the CBD. The homemade coffee and pastries do not disappoint. They even welcome you with a mini loaf of cornbread accompanied by specialty butter and syrup. It just doesn't get any better than that.

  2. The Country Club - This palace is for all the good-time guys and gals, we love it and we know why Brittany does too! From the moment you step foot in the door, you are engulfed in art. As you walk down the hand-painted corridor you may be met with some of the most fabulous drag queens in the city. People come from far and wide to see these performers so be sure to book in advance. The fun doesn't stop at brunch. There is an entire oasis in the rear of the house where the pool is flowing and so are the drinks. You may need to make this a full day experience. Promise you won't regret it.

  3. NOLA Caye - Brittany believes NOLA Caye is one of the best brunch places in New Orleans because of its unique and flavorful Caribbean-inspired dishes, such as the Jamaican-style jerk chicken and waffles or the Gulf shrimp and grits with coconut milk. The vibrant and colorful decor, reminiscent of the Caribbean, also adds to the lively atmosphere. In addition, their extensive menu of craft cocktails, including the popular Bottomless Caribbean Mimosas, makes for a perfect Sunday brunch experience.

Darcie Brai's Best in Brunch

  1. Surrey's - This Mid-City eatery is known for its delicious Bananas Foster French Toast. The funky decor and friendly staff make for a fun and casual dining experience. Darcie describes it as a "French loaf stuffed with banana-cream cheese. Topped with Bananas Foster sauce. It melts in your mouth."

  2. Tonti Hands - This charming French bistro in Algiers Point serves up flavorful dishes like Pain Perdue French Toast. The cozy atmosphere and attentive service make for a relaxing meal. Yes, Darcie knows her French Toast. OK, we see you, Darcie!

  3. Saint Johns - When guests come to town, Darcie recommends Saint Johns! This French Quarter spot is a great place to try authentic New Orleans cuisine without breaking the bank. The funky decor and lively atmosphere add to the experience.

Ready for that French Quarter surprise we promised. It involves sugar and a secret window. You can discover it here.
