The St. Roch neighborhood in New Orleans is rich with history and culture, offering intriguing insights into the city's past and present. Known for its vibrant community and unique landmarks, St. Roch holds several surprising facts that even locals overlook. Here are three surprising details about this historic neighborhood:

  • Unique Chapel Artifacts: The St. Roch Chapel has all kinds of unusual items like fake legs and teeth. People left these things there because they believed St. Roch healed them. This started after a priest prayed to St. Roch during a yellow fever outbreak in 1867, promising to build the chapel if his prayers were answered. Amazingly, no one in his parish died, so he built the chapel.  Every year a procession takes place to remember St Roch's role in saving the neighborhood.

  • Home to Free People of Color: Before the Civil War, St. Roch had one of the largest groups of free people of color in the U.S. Residents of St Roch created schools and contributed greatly to the neighborhood's culture and history.

This made it a unique and lively area, contributing to its community spirit and providing residents with loads to enjoy.
