A Few of Cool's Favorite Things This Holiday Season in New Orleans

Updated: Jun 19

Garlands on galleries and extra hot toddies. Carriages with sleigh bells, pulled by mules with thick bodies. Carrols sung by church choirs that groove as they sing. These are a few of Cool's favorite things!

When the street floods. When my tire thuds, over a pothole. I simply remember my favorite things, like Christmas in New Orleans!

I'm a total nerd for the Holidays! The lights, the music, the romcom's, the menus, the quality time, the surprising others with fun things. Thus, I'm excited to surprise y'all with a list of ten of my favorite New Orleans holiday things! BONUS! There's still time to enjoy them all.

10. Pup Pictures with Santa. Please bring your pup and join us at our first-ever Team Cool Murphy Holiday Fundraiser for Take Paws Rescue! We'll be at NOLA Bark Market in Bywater from 1 pm - 5 pm this coming Saturday, December 18th! Santa will be there for your very own pic of Santa with your dog! [dog doesn't like men, men in beards, men in bright costumes, all the above? Santa will step aside; he's merry like that.] More details here.

9. The Amazing Acrocats. I burst my Acrocat bubble last night and saw their Meowy Christmas Special. And, special it was! Purrrrfect way to spend an evening. Worth the ticket price, for a good cause, and highly entertaining. See my Instagram @coolmurphynola for a sneak peek! Each year, the Acrocats perform at the whimsical and wonderful Allways Lounge & Cabaret in Faubourg Marigny. Get your tickets before they're sold out here.

8. Caroling in the Square. Every year thousands join together in Jackson Square to spreading Christmas joy by singing loud for all to hear. The tour is presented by Patio Planters of the Vieux Carré and is simply joyous. This tradition has been going on since 1946! This year it takes place on December 19th. More details here.

7. Celebration in the Oaks. There's something magical about twinkling lights, and City Park takes it to new levels with Celebration in the Oaks. Expect to see Cajun Santa, a towering poinsettia tree, hop aboard a miniature train, and be whisked through a mile of light sculptures set in and amongst century-plus old live oaks. Plus hot cocoa, marshmallows for toasting, and even fake snow. Info here.

6. PRC Holiday Home Tour. Like to snoop around the city's most beautiful homes and gardens? Me too! The Preservation Resource Center's Holiday Home Tour allows you to do just that! Set in the Garden District, this year's tour takes place on December 10th - 12th and features several incredibly landscaped gardens turned winter wonderlands and video tours of four extraordinary homes. More info here.

5. Bayou Multi Janitorial. Speaking of home. Love the idea of real trees, flocking, glitter, tinsel, and parties, but hate the mess? Hire Bayou Multi Janitorial Services to clean up for you. They're my go-to and so so good at what they do.

4. No Era for Gift Giving. I'm guilty of shopping Amazon for gifts too. Oops! I love No Era because they curate exceptional items for the home (furniture, glass and flatware, art, and other décor) that are vintage and exquisite. No mass-market guilt, just beautiful belongings that brighten the home. You can find their online shop here.

3. Who Dat Café Peppermint Mochas. I confess. I'm one basic betty when it comes to flavored coffees, but know this, I've shopped around enough to know that Who Dat Coffee Café has the best peppermint mochas in town. PLUS! You can get one fixed for you with a bit of 21 and up flavor added too. Great for a stroll through Marigny to the Quarter for some small business shopping.

2. Brenan's with Bells On. Did you know that visiting most any Brennan's establishment in December means getting your own jingle bell ribbon necklace? Each place with its own ribbon color? They're fun to collect, and you don't need a reservation or a four-course meal; ordering one of their delicious happy hour holiday cocktails will have you leaving with bells on, literally.

1. The French Quarter with Matt. Matt and I have a tradition. Each year we pop by Who Dat, get our coffee in hand, and stroll to the Quarter. There we tour the various hotel lobbies and soak in the Christmas cheer. My favorites are The Roosevelt, The Monteleone, and The Rtiz. Matt loves the walk, I love the photoshoots. We also do some shopping for loved ones and each other. It always involves a stop to buy each other an ornament at one of the Quarters fun shops, often including Santa's Workshop on Decatur. Hiding the ornament chosen for each other adds to the fun. Finally, we wrap up the adventure with celebratory drinks and snacks, where we surprise each other with the ornaments we sneakily bought along the way. So if you see us shopping, pretty please don't point out where the other is or what they're purchasing.

There you have it. A few of my favorite things! The list keeps growing and changing. Things I'm excited to try out new this season? The Nutcracker at The Marigny Opera House, performed with a jazz band!

I love where I live and I love sharing it with you. Do you love where you live? If you are dreaming of a new home this Christmas? I'd sure love to help!
